Originally, I laughed at the term, but then I saw this photo:

Chernobyl: Life in the Dead Zone

This documentary isn't as scary as it may seem because it has "Chernobyl" in the title. It's got kittens, bears, butterflies, hawks, boars, elk, a lone wolf—all kinds of cute, really, and no three-eyed fish. However, all of the animals are radioactive.

It's timely because of the nuclear meltdowns happening in Japan, of course, but it's also worth considering whether "clean" nuclear energy is worth such risks. As the movie says,

"It's a story that could have happened anywhere."

This little piece of heaven is called Giraffe Manor. It's in Nairobi, Kenya. It's a hotel and giraffe sanctuary—especially for the endangered Rothschild species. The beautiful mansion was built in 1932 as a private residence and turned into a sanctuary in 1974.

The giraffefaces stick their heads in windows and doors in hopes of getting a little tasty treat from any one of the amused humanoids. (Warthogs live there, too, but judging by the length of their necks, visitors don't have to worry about them peeking in through the windows.)

Have you visited Smithsonian Wild?

It's some grade-A wild-animal porn created by the Smithsonian Institution and collaborators by remote research cameras in the wilderness around the world. The site explains:

"The use of motion-triggered 'camera traps' has become an incredibly useful tool for scientists to answer an enormous range of conservation and ecological questions. Researchers attach these unique cameras to posts or trees, often along forest trails, and when a camera's sensor registers an animal's body heat and movement, a photograph is taken. The studies highlighted here demonstrate the range of applications of this method, and how these cameras give us a glimpse into an animal world that is rarely seen by anyone."

And the images are amazing. Some are even better composed than a lot of intentional photographs. Anyway, there's jaguars from Peru; African and Asian elephants; takins; Asian black bears, serows and Temminck's tragopans from China; spotted hyenas and giraffes from Kenya; ocelots from Panama—chasing an armadillo! It's serious research.
So enjoy being amazed by hundreds of wild-animal photos.

ASPCA headlines. What will you do?

Just checked in with ASPCA online. It has lots of great kitty and puppy porn—it's called Cute Photo of the Day—but the animal-welfare case headlines are nothing short of shocking.

"West Virginia Farm Owner Charged with Animal Cruelty Over Dead Horses"
Here, 28 dead horses were found on his farm, all apparently dead due to starvation. County Sheriff James Childers is quoted in the story saying, "There's no evidence of feed anywhere on the farm that we've [seen] yet."

The heart sinks, breaks, and then the next headline:

"More Than 100 Dogs Rescued from Alleged Puppy Mill Operation in Ohio"
Stephanie Moore, the executive director of the Medina County SPCA, says in the story, "This is the single worst environment I have ever seen. We literally had to climb onto a layer of feces, urine and garbage to get inside the house. It was at least two feet high."
The story goes on: "Moore said that the two women fed the dogs raw kale and uncooked rice and that the canines had no water bowls."

Please don't buy puppies: adopt from rescue shelters. If there's no demand, people who breed and raise inhumanely won't have any incentive to create animals to mistreat.

"Florida Man Accused of Killing Brother's Miniature Horse, Dog"
The story says, "Walton County sheriff's deputies say they went to the pen where the horse was kept and found bloody drag marks and tire tracks."

What? Why? Why?

It's hard to imagine a good reason. What can we do to act on behalf of abused animals? What can you do as an individual to prevent or stop cruelty and torture?

Stacking food on animals

Japanese game shows have a reputation for being kind of crazy. There's this video of a game show which involves stacking food on patient pets. There's a lot of drool, baby talk in Japanese, a Gumby shirt and an insane amount of food tempting the animals, which seems like a mild form animal torture—or just really testing their will. It is kind of amazing, though.

A wolverine has been spotted in the Sierra Nevada by motion-detecting cameras. According to The Sacramento Bee:

"Scientists have traced the animal's DNA to wolverines in the northern Rockies and believe he may have wandered down solo from Idaho – a journey of more than 500 miles across rivers, deserts, highways and railroads."

14 dead dolphins at Las Vegas' MGM Mirage

In June of 2009, the Las Vegas Sun reported that the 14th dolphin since 1990 at the MGM Mirage died from complications of a lung infection in its marine facilities. That seems like a lot. Change.org sent the following to gain signatures on a petition:

The dolphins are trapped in a concrete pool next to a highway. They breathe in fumes and smog day after day. There's no protection from the desert heat or the winter snow. Seventy-five percent die prematurely.

This is the horrifying existence of the dolphins at The Mirage Hotel and Casino's "Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat." Imprisoned in pools that are too shallow and too small, they're forced to do mindless tricks for high-paying guests day after day – until they develop respiratory infections and diseases that claim their lives.

No creature should be treated this way. Tell The Mirage to end its cruelty to dolphins.

Animal protection organizations have appealed to the National Marine Fisheries Service to deny The Mirage's requests for more dolphins, but as more and more dolphins die -- the death count is now at 14 -- the Mirage keeps "restocking" its exhibit.

This isn't the first time The Mirage has faced criticism for its reprehensible treatment of animals. In the past, The Mirage housed tigers in the building -- but due to large opposition from the public, the casino is now tiger-free.

This set a clear precedent: If The Mirage believes the public fallout will be worse than the profits it makes from its mistreated animals, it will stop its despicable behavior.

Together, we can build the pressure needed to free The Mirage's dolphins. Sign this petition today to tell The Mirage to stop imprisoning, mistreating, and causing the deaths of dolphins:

Giant anteaters

Giant anteaters are from South America, are as large as German shepherd dogs, and are endangered. That last bit is especially lame.

They are pretty amazing animals, able to eat up to 30,000 ants or termites a day with a super-long tongue.

Recently, there was an anteater born at the San Francisco Zoo, and it's crazy cute. Pictures of it are on this site that you will surely waste hours of your time on, ZooBorns: "The newest and cutest exotic baby animals from zoos and aquariums around the world." That's right: A website full of photographs of baby zoo animals. What was that noise? The sound of your head exploding? Cool. It gets worse, though: It has "Fennec Fridays." Regularly scheduled fennecs? Yikers.

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society: There's an app for that

More news about the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
A few weeks ago, this nonprofit marine wildlife conservation organization launched an iPhone app. It's available for download free at the iTunes store. According to the Huffington Post, it "gives a positive new meaning to the term 'armchair activist,' offering users the opportunity to take part in Sea Shepherd's hi-stakes campaigns from any iPhone mobile device."

Wiki leaked whaling deal

Earlier this month, there was this headline in the Guardian U.K.:

"WikiLeaks: Secret whaling deal plotted by US and Japan."

It gets worse. Here's the subhead:

"American diplomats proposed Japan reduce whaling in exchange for US help cracking down on the anti-whaling activists Sea Shepherd, leaked cables reveal."

And there was this incident in 2010 where a Japanese whaling ship, the Shonan Maru No. 2, struck and destroyed Sea Shepherd's $2 million activist ship, the Ady Gil:

"The American proposal would have forced Japan to reduce the number of whales that Japan killed each year in the Antarctic whale sanctuary in return for the legal right to hunt other whales off its own coasts. In addition, the US proposed to ratify laws that would 'guarantee security in the seas' – a reference to acting against groups such as Sea Shepherd that have tried to physically stop whaling."

Sea Shepherd's founder, Captain Paul Watson, responded:

"The US government may have very well looked into Sea Shepherd's activities and if they did so, then they obviously did not find any irregularities or unlawful activities because Sea Shepherd was never contacted by any US government official in connection with this matter. For Sea Shepherd, the most important part of this document is the declaration by Japan that Sea Shepherd has been responsible for the whaling fleet not reaching their quotas for the last few years. This completely validates Sea Shepherd's actions as effective."

Why do girls love horses?

What is the deal with the fascination girls have with horses? It's not as if guys aren't into them, but proportionately, females outnumber dudes. It's one of those mysteries I'd like to get a little more insight on.

The Ultimate Horse Site, has a theory about it. It says that in the past horses were used as tools or servants for business and war, thus, males usually handled them. But as technology developed and the reliance on them for practical matters waned, their image changed and they became companion animals, and instead of "breaking them in," they were becoming trained in a way

"similar to teaching a child. In many ways, the relationship between horse and rider is similar to the relationship between mother and child, which I believe is the main reason why so many girls are attracted to horses. ... Women and girls have the natural maternal instinct to want to take care of and raise children, and horses enable them to act on that instinct."

That was the least inane idea on the Webs when doing a simple search (i.e., "There is no answer to this. It's genetic I think.")

Small dog, big feat

This pup reminds me of the dog in that Tom Hanks classic Turner and Hooch.

Minus the excessive drool, luckily. (Sleepyface, ho!)

And this is a small dog.

So they meet. And the small dog somehow thinks he can fit that tennis ball in his small-dog mouth. Good luck with that, little fella. Hooch doesn't look too optimistic about the prospect of the wee one successfully getting his ball.

Holy cow, he did it!

And now he will be crushed by the giant Hooch stunt double for stealing his ball! Oh no!

Scenes from a cat show

Sharing one side of the building that the cat show was being held in, there was a gun show. The arrow on the sign directs straight ahead for the guns, and veer right for cats. The four males in this shot going for the guns mused, "There's a cat show?" And the neon-orange hatted fellow said, "Every gun show needs targets."

As mentioned before, there was an excess of leopard- and other safari-animal-print decorating by the competitors.

Cat (show) ladies

Someone went to a cat show.

Someone learned that a hefty percentage of the cat (show) ladies like to dress like cats themselves ... and in lots of leopard prints, from the young 'uns to the old timers.

Here's a few for now.

This cat, however, is huge, if you can't tell. Huge. Close to the size of six regular cats, maybe. And her cat lady on the end of the leash is wearing cat ears to match hers, if you can't tell.

The chupacabra mystery finally solved. Almost.

The mystery of the chupacabra, the legendary hairless creature whose name means "goat sucker" in Spanish, has at last been solved.

Kind of.

The Huffy Post (via CNN) reported a recent sighting and the critter was identified as a raccoon. But where's it fur? Well, that's the unsolved part. Patience, people. One discovery at a time. Watch it:

Casey's hot

Casey was cold.

She introduced herself to the warmth of flames.

She's cute, but acting a little dumb, getting too close to the fire.

Anyway, she heated up her little shark chin ...

... and contemplated the chimney as an escape route. (She did eventually scale the bricks—when there was no fire, of course—but her attempt at being Santa was kiboshed.)

Mysterious white insect

It looked to be just a piece of flora, or some natural debris at first. But lo and behold, it has a head! Legs, even! It's a mysterious, magical white-hued insect.

Having no idea what it is, an inquiry has been sent to What's That Bug?, as featured in a Petophile post a few months ago in September.

Cross your fingers that WTB? identifies the critter. Will share results, of course.

Who is Caseyface?

Caseyface is, apparently, the third most popular cat on the Internet (ranking behind Maru and Surprised Kitty), because people from all over the United States and the world—Italy, Denmark, Canada, Belgium, Norway, Germany—are landing on the Petophile after searching for "caseyface porn" or "who is caseyface."

Well, this is who she is: Casey is a beast. She is also obscenely cute, and due to this circumstance, has starred in her own videos, has had logos made from her likeness, and instead of meowing, squeaks. To boot, she does it all scantily clad, wearing nothing but a collar. Guess that's all it takes to warrant international fame these days.

Not to say that she isn't talented. How many felines can jump vertically into small brown paper bags?

She can.

And though she might be a vicious beast ...

she's also so cute and cuddly ...

... that even shoes like to spoon with her.

60 cats die in New Year's Eve fire

This is very sad news. Via the Modesto Bee in California, about 60 cats perished in a fire on Friday at Last Hope Cat Kingdom sanctuary.

The story on modbee.com says:

Authorities say a fire at a Merced County animal sanctuary killed more than 60 cats. Fire officials responded to the blaze at the Last Hope Cat Kingdom in Atwater about 1 a.m. Friday. State fire spokesman Jose Quintana said the fire, caused by some sort of an electrical failure, was under control about two hours later. But by then, more than 60 of the nearly 140 cats housed there had died. Last Hope Cat Kingdom founder Renate Schmitz said she plans to rebuild the shelter, which had been open for four years.

Di Liu takes better pictures than you: Wins Lacoste Elysee Prize 2010

Chinese photographer Di Liu won the Lacoste Elysee prize for the series of photographs below.

On the Elysée Lausanne website (www.elysee.ch), it says,

"In his work, Di Liu, a 25 year old Chinese photographer, focuses on the conflicting relationship between nature and human society, which is created by the phenomenal rate of Chinese urban development."

There are three more to see (it's worth it) of a panda, frog and monkey here.

Cats used as insulation

Wild goose chase

The Pet got a submission of nasty animals from a human, along with a narrative. According to the human, the goose chase went like this:

1. Momma and baby together.

2. Baby gets separated and starts squeaking.

3. Other birds start responding. (I hear it takes a village.)

4. Momma comes and says, "Here I am!"

5. OK, good. Now back to a floatable spot where you can keep up a bit better.

6. Sweet.

Don't call it a comeback/Baby burro

Like Ladies Love Cool James, despite the lack of posts for the past several days, this is not a comeback: The Petophile's been here ... but the Internets haven't been there for the Petophile, thus the lack of a daily dose of kitty porn for you two readers recently.

So, remember way back in June when the Petophile posted this photo below? No, of course you don't.

Well, with the photo, it was written:

"These are a couple of free-range burros on a Caribbean island, standing in the middle of the road near the beach. The second one, a foal, is the out-of-focus gray thing taking up the right third of the shot, and that's mama on the left, of course. It's an extreme close-up of the foal: The black oblong spot is its eye."

And that "Another (clearer) photo of the babe exists; I'll post if it's popularly requested."

Only one reader requested it. Another comment was made, but was "deleted by its author." Considering that the Petophile's readership is only two people (the rest of the visitors seem to be people super creepily trolling for Caseyface—not the cute, fuzzy one who puts her face in a bag, but some underage exhibitionist. So not cool, dudes), we must come to terms that one vote is, sadly, 50 percent of the readership.

Fresian hair care

Fresians are a breed of horses that are typically black and have luxuriously long manes and tails. This one here is a show horse, so it's mane and forelock are braided and it's wearing a hood to keep it all clean.

The Petophile kind of reads another book

Who wants another book review? Nobody? Ah, who asked you, anyway.

Here we've got Dear Sparkle: Cat-to-Cat Advice From the World's Foremost Feline Columnist. The book is "authored" by Sparkle, a little minxy Somali breed cat. The book consists of letters written Dear-Abby style by cats to Sparkle, thus the "cat-to-cat" part in the subtitle. They are divvied up into different sections—"Games Kitties Play," "Cat vs. Human," "Epi-curious"—with each response accompanied by a photo of Sparkle. The photos (what the Petophile was really interested in, obviously) are amatureish, but since that's usually OK for kitty porn, they get a pass. Just barely. This is actually a decent book to read or to give to someone who lacks understanding of cats, and because it's masked in Sparkle's "voice" it makes it humorous. You know, a little sugar to make the medicine go downskis.

The Petophile can't read, but here's a book review anyway

The Petophile can't really read books—unless it's picture books. (And you know what kind of pictures, if you know what I mean.)

Despite that, here's a book review of The Complete Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook Man Skills. Aside from a hyperbolic and ridiculously long title, it contains instructions for "How to Prevent Snoring" (sew a tennis ball onto the back of your pajamas), "How to Take the Last Doughnut" (are they cereal?) and this little gem, "Facial Hair Options":

None of these topics strike me as a worst-case scenarios, although there does seem to be a few bona-fide ones included, like "How to Build a Shelter in the Snow" and ... "How to Toilet Train Your Cat"? Well, at least there's one. And, in a life-or-death situation in which your cat demands a fort, this book will have you covered:

Video by 20/20, but don't worry: It's John Stossel free! (His face reminds me of a mask. Is that weird? It looks like it's been plastic surgerized and then topped with that Magnum P.I. mustache. I like the bison's face loads more.)

Rare red foxes found in Sierra Nevada

This photo of this foxy fox was taken by a remote camera near Yosemite National Park. Scott Sonner wrote about it for the Associated Press:

"Federal wildlife biologists have confirmed sightings of two more Sierra Nevada red foxes that once were thought to be extinct."

Yes!

"Scientists believe the foxes are related to another that was photographed this summer near Yosemite National Park. More importantly, they say, DNA samples show enough diversity in the Sierra Nevada red foxes to suggest a 'fairly strong population' of the animals may secretly be doing quite well in the rugged mountains about 90 miles south of Reno."
