Owls in the ground

Burrowing owls. Didn't know that some owls lived underground, eh? These are indeed real critters, not those plastic decoys people put in their yards to fool "pests" to stay away. In the photo below, two of the three winged ones are standing inside the entrance of their home. As if that didn't make these yellow-eyed feathered animals anomalous enough, they are also diurnal--deducible as these photos were taken during the day.

That's not an optical illusion: It's cookie-cutter housing and a golf course.
